The Wild Heart of Idaho
Share
A love letter to the forests that shaped us.
Idaho doesn’t get the press of Colorado.
It doesn’t have Washington's crowds.
But ask anyone who’s spent time under her trees or followed a trail into her wildest corners, and they’ll tell you: Idaho is the real deal.
Towering peaks. Glacial lakes. Alpine meadows that bloom like a secret. And forests—millions of acres of them—that still feel untouched by time.
This place isn’t just beautiful. It’s sacred. And it’s why Lonely Larch exists.
🌲 9 National Forests. One Big Legacy.
Idaho is home to over 20 million acres of national forest. That’s nearly 40% of the entire state—a wilderness playground, a conservation powerhouse, and a reminder of what real wild looks like.
Here are just a few of the forests we love:
Sawtooth National Forest
Rugged, jagged, iconic. The Sawtooths feel like they were pulled from the pages of an old adventure novel—because they kind of were. With over 700 miles of trails, it’s a backcountry dream.
Boise National Forest
Rolling river canyons, dense pine groves, and some of the best hot springs you’ll ever soak in. Boise Forest sits just outside the city—and somehow feels a world away.
Payette National Forest
Vast and quiet, this one’s for the solitude seekers. Think: high alpine lakes, moose tracks in the mud, and sunrise coffee without a soul around.
Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests
Home to the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness—one of the first ever protected under the Wilderness Act—and full of deep cultural and ecological significance.
And more: Caribou-Targhee. Salmon-Challis. Idaho Panhandle. Every one of them wild, wonderful, and worth fighting for.
🧭 Why These Forests Matter
Idaho’s national forests:
-
Provide habitat for wolves, lynx, salmon, and bears
-
Protect headwaters that feed the West’s major rivers
-
Offer recreation, solitude, and healing for millions of people
-
Preserve the cultural heritage of Indigenous nations, who’ve stewarded this land for generations
-
Capture carbon, clean the air, and filter our water
They are not a luxury. They are a lifeline.
💚 What We Owe Them
We hike their trails. We brew coffee in their camps.
We fill our lungs with their air and our cups with their silence.
The least we can do? Give back.
That’s why Lonely Larch donates a portion of profits to national forest conservation. It’s not charity—it’s gratitude. And it’s the reason we’re so proud to call Idaho home.
✋ Before You Go
Next time you sip your coffee or lace up your boots for a trail run, think about what it means to have 20 million acres of shared wilderness right here in our backyard.
Let’s keep them standing. Let’s keep them public. Let’s keep them wild.
Drink up. Speak up. Let’s keep Idaho wild out there. 🌲
